My New/Old Mullet

I know Sherm. It’s still not Fish, but I have finally entered the world of the tapered, ride a smaller pow board. I’ve been riding a 162 when it’s been deep for the last couple of seasons. Now, I can officially introduce my new/old, 07/08 LibTech Mullet 156.

I’ve been in love with this board since my Tahoe roomie bought it new in 07/08. With a 2.5 cm taper, my Mullet falls right in between Burton Fish (3 cm) and Burton Malolo (2 cm)- but with MagnaTraction! Actually, it seems like the MT might be overkill since there’s really no point in the extra contact points MT provides when you’re floating on bukake fusion. Regardless, I’m stoked!

For $125 it has experienced a couple of snowsnakes, but it’s a perfect shred project while I continue rehabbing my bionic knee. Hopefully, by the time March rolls around, I’ll actually be able to ride the board in the conditions it was meant for (see previous post). Keep your fingers crossed!

09/10 Shred Season recap

09/10 Shred Season Recap from drew dizzle on Vimeo.

Overall, 09/10 was damn good snowboard season. I was back to being a weekend warrior, but still managed to get 33 days in. (Mt. Hood has insanely long seasons, and 100+ inches the first two weeks of April definitely helped.)

Thanks to furlough days from my struggling company, I was able to make opening day on November 11. Friend of Board of America and original 603 loc, Ryan Schelling, was in town and the gods blessed us with a 12'+ of blower and bukake fusion turns were had by all.

The snow fell through the new year but started to dry up mid-January. Fortunately, I had planned a brief Tahoe trip for the end of January. Up to that point, Tahoe was pretty much dry. Snow or not, I was stoked to get back and see some old friends but the night I flew in, my flight was delayed 3 hours because of snow in Reno. The first clip in the video is from the night I flew in. It proceed to dump for the next 5 days.

The snow in Oregon returned at the end of February and proceed to continue through mid-April. The season ended on May 16 and Sherman and I closed Meadows down. The main lift stopped turning as we cruised by it on the way to the car and the cold road sodas waiting for us. A fitting end to the 6 month season...

So after all that, I could barely scrape together a minute and a half of footy to document it. It's far from great, but fun nonetheless. Enjoy...

Don't Tickle the Mountain

A couple of weeks ago, I went up to Ski Bowl on Mt. Hood. I got a late start and it was warm and rainy. As a foot+ of fresh turned slowly into glue, I decided to explore the Outback bowl area of the mountains. Ski Bowl is kind of like an epic back yard. Short, but great steep sections leading into a meadows of flatness, then steep, then flat, etc.

With no agenda other than to just ride, I decided to explore this inbounds bowl area called the Outback Bowl. I got some pretty decent turns considering, but flatness meant stopage so the fun was short lived. However, because I was forced to unstrap and hike to the next pitch, I made the most of my exploring and found some of the best turns I've ever made. The area I found was a couple hundred yards of wide open 50+ degree slope with two cliff bands at the top. The cliffs were off limits due to trees in the landing, but between them was a nearly perfect shoot. I went down the far side of the area the first time to scope it out. So now I'm standing on the top of the chute planning my turns.

"Toeside into it, quick heelside in the bend, then point it out for a big toeside slasher, and one more heelside out into the opening below."

Everything went perfect. The stoke was fueled and I put my high speed, pow wheelie down to scope the portion of earth that had just been shredded. I turn only to see an avalanche half as wide as the slope, and overhead height sliding right past me. I didn't feel anything slide while riding, but apparently at the top of the chute, there was a three foot fracture and the whole face slid. Luckily, my turns brought me out of its path, but damn! Never under estimate the mountain! Changing snow conditions are key factors in avalanches, but it was really the last thing on my mind. A long story short: snow fun was had, but otherwise, mellow area held a secret that could've been dangerous.

Truck Caps Rule

The first two pics I made a reformed hippie named JP, once called 'joint papers', take of me at Timberline last week. The last pic is a timeless shot taken by friend Shawn Lavigne in my backyard park in SLT last winter. Check hood in the background on the first one, and how epic is a truck cap!?
